Meet Alex Witt: From Lockdown to Long-Distance Legend!

Meet Alex Witt: From Lockdown to Long-Distance Legend!

I’m Alex Witt, a 23-year-old distance runner from beautiful Dunedin, New Zealand. As I pursue my Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Sports Science, I can’t help but reflect on my unique journey into the world of competitive running—a journey that really began during the unexpected pause of 2020.

The Start of Something New

When the world slowed down, I decided it was time to speed up my life. We all remember the challenges of the Covid lockdown, right? Well, for me, it sparked a desire to make a significant change. At the time, I weighed 110kg and struggled with motivation and self-image. But instead of wallowing, I laced up my shoes and started running every day!

The first few runs were tough. Picture me, battling through 5km while my brothers looked on, doubtful I’d stick with it. But I was determined to prove them wrong! I set a personal goal to keep myself motivated, and soon enough, I was hooked.

A Bold Challenge

Fast forward four months from that first run in March 2020—I had a wild idea: to complete a 70.3 Ironman! My friends and family were understandably skeptical. I could barely manage a half marathon, let alone the swimming and biking components! But with grit and determination, I trained relentlessly.

Then, in March 2021, I crossed the finish line of the Taupo 70.3 Ironman in an exhilarating 5:31. It was a pivotal moment that ignited a fire in me to keep pushing my limits.

Finding My Groove

In June 2021, I met my coach, Mark, at Pegasus Parkrun. His advice to focus on running was exactly what I needed. Under his guidance, I’ve improved drastically, even winning races and lowering my personal bests to a competitive level nationally. Each step I take solidifies my passion for the sport, and I couldn’t be happier!

A Running Highlight

A highlight of the journey so far happened a few weeks ago at the Dunedin Marathon, where after back-to-back second-place finishes in the two years prior, I finally was able to grab the win over the 10km, breaking the course record in the process. This meant heaps, as Dunedin has become a special part of my running journey, so be able to finally take the win in a race that I love was unreal.

Looking Ahead

As I continue my journey, I’m incredibly excited to see where running can take me. With fantastic support from quality nutrition products like Gu, I’m geared up for my next challenge—the National 10km Road Championships in Timaru at the end of October. I’m aiming for a new PB, and I can’t wait to share the experience with all of you!

Join Me on This Journey!

I hope my story inspires you to chase your own goals, no matter how daunting they may seem. Remember, every great journey begins with a single step. Let’s keep running towards our dreams!

Stay tuned for more updates, and thank you for being part of this amazing journey!

Cheers,
Alex Witt 🏃‍♂️💨
